What do you mean by "shaders"? (This term has several meanings in the presence of a MatSys.) Exactly as you say, small scripts. :) I've stopped my work on CaWE (at least for now), in favour of preparing the upcoming release. By the way, Kai. It would be nice if you would write a tutorial, or quick "how-to", on your techniques. Your images are fantastic. I know a lot of people who would benefit.

Edit: Also, will the new MatSys support shaders? Sorry if this info has been posted already.

As Stormstrooper's textures are not really "technical surfaces", I believe height map (or grey scaled image) generated normal maps are sufficient, for the most part. I can see how images that are designed for structural surfaces must have geometric based normal maps, but do you really think that it ...

Well, I will certainly use them for Project Mayhem. I can also make the normal maps if you wish. Here is a test I did with the asphalt3 image. I am very pleased with the initial results. Look good! :) Btw, just in case you don't have the latest version of NewMaterials.pdf already, you might want to have a look into section 9 of http://www.ca3d-engine.de/Forum/NewMaterials.pdf It explains where shadow artifacts come from (namely from models that are no closed 2-manifolds).
