Display of a Joomla page made from phpbb3 forum posts

Post by w259lkt » 2010-01-08, 14:14

Hi Carsten!

My name is Dragos Dobre, the administrator of http://www.aripiromanesti.ro (site and forum) for "Romanian Wings" Association - an NGO (non-governmental organisation) that promotes aviation and flight, with a clear focus on Romanian aeronautics and Romanian aviation promotion inside and outside the borders of the country.

I write to you because I have seen your work for cafu.de site including the three step “phpBB — newsfeed — Joomla” solution that allows for display of a Joomla page made from phpbb3 forum posts. ( I saw your comment here: http://blog.phpbb.com/2009/11/09/how-to ... nal-pages/ )

We would like to use the same solution but I do not know how to implement it. Your help will be greatly appreciated if you can describe your solution a little bit...

Furthermore, we would be interested in your MOD for the native phpBB feed.php code that deals with CSS formatting, images, inline attachments, custom BBcodes and similar issues.

Looking forward to hear from you,
Best regards,
Dragos

Dear Dragos,

I moved your post to "General and Miscellaneous", because it's less about Cafu and its website, but more about phpBB and Joomla in general. ;)

Great to hear that!
I'm active in general aviation (non-governmental) as well, my home airport is http://www.edrh.de, where I'm a flight instructor and happen to be the site webmaster as well.

Well, your question is quite broad in context, it would be easier if you asked more precisely what exactly your problem is, but let me try to get you started:
  1. "Part 1" is the newsfeed from the phpBB board:
The new 3.0.6 version of phpBB3 comes with this feature build-in, ready-for-use, but I still use this MOD, as this functionality was not available before 3.0.6, as is now.
As you start "from scratch" anyways, I would however recommend that you just use the build-in newsfeed. For Cafu, that would be http://www.cafu.de/forum/feed.php?mode=news.
This is what you have to achieve as a first step, too: Configure your phpBB feed (in the Admin Control Panel) so that you can see it in the web browser just like the link for Cafu above.
  2. "Part 2" is even simpler: Login to your Joomla administrator panel, create a new feed via the "Components --> News Feeds" menu (using the URL from "Part 1"), finally use the Menu Manager in order to create a new menu item of type "News Feed" (where the previously created feed is assigned in the "Parameters (Basic)" panel).
Furthermore, we would be interested in your MOD for the native phpBB feed.php code that deals with CSS formatting, images, inline attachments, custom BBcodes and similar issues.
The only problem with this “phpBB — newsfeed — Joomla” solution is that html elements and css styling easily get lost. I'm not exactly sure what subset of html and css is (per standards definition) allowed in an RSS feed, but both feed producers (phpBB in this case) as well as consumers (Joomla) are in the habit to drop elements and formatting for increased safety.

This is normally a much desired behavior, but gets a little in the way here. However, the changes to avoid the filtering are somewhat delicate and difficult to explain here (this is what the MOD that I proposed in my articles comment is about, which I've not even begun yet). You should definitively start with the two steps above and "unmodded" phpBB and Joomla -- the result is certainly already very useful as-is. :cheesy:

Hope that helps! :captain:

Carsten

Dear Carsten,

Thank you for your reply and attention !
I'll follow the steps described by you and I'll come back with a response.
About the mod you proposed, we will be glad to test it if at any later date it will be available.

I'm impressed that you are a flight instructor! I am just UL pilot :)
It's one beautiful AN-2 on the site you have there , and , as far as my german language knowledge allows me, I can appreciate the site of edrh.de and the flight activity there. Keep it up!

Thank you again,
Best regards,
Dragos
