To revive this thread, I post a work in progress picture, a very special one (at least for me). I tried 2 days ago a new modelling program, Blender. My first try, an airplane, was a complete mess so I tried this AK 47, and for my second model in Blender, it's to my mind awesome
It it not that complex to model and because of the fact that it's a weapon that has been modelled 10000 times, it gives me the possibility to compare my poor noob skills with skillful those of pros.

I never was into modelling so the last weapon I did looked like this. Looks better, doesn't it? It's still not complete, I'll add more details tomorrow and I'll try to create a high poly model for a normal map, but I don't know yet if Blender can do this.

Model has 966 polys right now. Well I'm a total noob so tips and constructive critics are welcome, thx

Small update, I added some more details. Polycount is now 1250.

Cool, you're making good progress! ;)

I also splitted your posts from the big "Previews" thread into a separate one, which - imho - makes more sense. ;)

Keep up the good work!

Nice work so far Thrawn!!
How are you handling the blender interface? I find it a nightmare.

For me, it makes quite a lot of sense. The interface is being rendered directly in OpenGL and I can design it as I want.

Your personal interface setup can be saved and loaded, very practical. Depending on what I'm doing, I load up the suiting interface/window order.

As I was not really into modelling, I can't really compare it with other programs - I learned it like this and everything makes sense to me ;)

I totally love the system, as I totally love Blender :loveit:

BTW I'm currently creating the uv maps and skinning them. I just finished the first part of the model, the magazine. Yeah I know, it's not just my first real weapon model, but it will also be my first full hand-drawn weapon skin but until now, I'm quite happy with it. I'll post new screenshots within the next few days :)

Looks Great

This looks great! I know I could not model as well as that. And I'm sure that it will look much better with textures added to it. As long as the textures are good.

Finally finished skinning that thing. I have to admit that I can't skin so the AK doesn't look that good, but at least you can recognize it ^^

I was to dumb to make a good render with Blender, so I made a preview window screen:

Maybe it will be usable someday ^^

That's really nice :) You should try and improve the skin, here's something to get you motivated:
It's a model I made about a year ago when I was bored at work (so only spent about an hour on it), as you can see my brushwork isn't that good as yours, but here you see the magic of putting on a nice skin (actually there a quite a few parts where the skin doesn't fit, but I think you'll get the idea ^^)

Yes indeed, the texture is very bad. I'll try someday :P to improve it.

Did you use photo textures for your skin?

Yup, except for the glass in the scope :)

Im not THAT good at texturing, but i'd suggest to edit the skin a bit. Photo's can be perfect references, but they just look bad to use them directly imho. Good work anyway! :D

Very Nice model for a beginner it looks like a pro did it... well not like quake3 but close though lol. Just got a question did you do parts of the weapon and then add all the parts together or did you do all the detail at one go? Just wondering cause i have trouble with so many polys then i thought of just making one part and then add all the parts together so i don't get screwed up making it so detailed.

I know what you mean. The whole model was put together with seperate models. The weapon stock and basic metal body is one part, all the details on top and at the side + the front parts have been models seperatly and "put" on the model.

BTW: Welcome to the forums :D
