Could not Integrate Autodesk FBX

Post by sphyrth » 2012-09-24, 11:11

I'm using the rc625 SDK, and I have VisualC++2008 as my compiler.

I wasn't really sure which version of the FBX SDK to use (Python or VS2008), so I downloaded both just in case.

Assuming I have carefully followed the instructions in Using the Autodesk FBX SDK.

After installing the FBX SDK Python version, it doesn't get integrated by scons. The same thing happens to the VS2008 version.

The only lines I can similarly see in them have something to do with some undeclared identifiers.

The VS2008 (not Python) version is the right one. But alas! They removed all 2012.* downloads, and the newer 2013.* are not backwards compatible.

I'll look into this as soon as possible, and have just increased the priority of http://trac.cafu.de/ticket/118 accordingly.

If you need a model converted before, say, the end of next week, please let me know: send me the model, and I'll convert it to cmdl for you.

Oh, thanks. But I just happen to start learning Blender, and the mdl files are sufficient for my weapon coding needs. But is there a way to make them editable for blender?

A good question. They're really old, and new models would probably not be saved in mdl file format. (This also indicates that it would probably be a good idea to add some generic exporters to the CaWE Model Editor, for cases like this one... have to find some spare time though...)

Right now, Milkshape is probably the best approach. You should be able to use it to convert the mdl to something you can edit in Blender, then save them back to one of the formats that the Model Editor can import.

Please let me know if this works. My own modelling experience is little, and I'm happy about any feedback that I can get in this regard.

Got it, I was at least able to edit static meshes, but editing it takes a while. I know very little about those smd files that only shows the skeleton of the animated models.

Anyways, I'm not much in a hurry about the FBX thing. I'm only glad that you're happy to help.

EDIT:
Skip that 2nd to the last sentence. I posted before checking Cafu's Twitter.

Yes, I fixed #118 last night, using the Autodesk FBX SDK 2013.3. Please let me know if you have any problems.

About the mdls, smds: It was long ago when they were last edited, today I'd not save anything new in this format. The key idea with the Cafu model editor is to create the source models in one of the generic file formats that are supported by the major modeling tools (and to return to those for any future edits etc.), and to use the Cafu Model Editor typically only in the "last" step, to eventually make the Cafu-specific conversions and tweaks.

Even if the last post is very old, I thought it would be the best to post it here.

Yeah, I do have problems compiling the CaWE.exe after adding FBX SDK.

Code: Select all

LINK : fatal error LNK1181: Eingabedatei "fbxsdk-2013.3-md.lib" kann nicht geöffnet werden.
(oops german, but I don't want to try to translate ;)) I used Autodesk FBX SDK 2013.3 and also tried 2014.1 but I got the same error.
I followed the instructions of you related article.... and I found an eventual error: the newer Versions call their examples folder samples... renaming didn't helped..

Which version is the patch for 2013.2 in? I used cafu-1debdc36ab0e (the last full version)

I'm working on Win 7 and VS 2010 Express as Compiler.

Greetings,
Joachim

Hi Joachim,

Hmm... first idea: Does the file actually exist??

For example, on my system, in the main Cafu directory:

Code: Select all

d:\Dev\Cafu> dir ExtLibs\fbx\lib\vs2010\x86
 Verzeichnis von d:\Dev\Cafu\ExtLibs\fbx\lib\vs2010\x86

[...]
2012-09-14 03:47 32.366.874 fbxsdk-2013.3-md.lib
2012-09-14 03:54 41.241.406 fbxsdk-2013.3-mdd.lib
2012-09-14 04:17 34.079.736 fbxsdk-2013.3-mt.lib
2012-09-14 04:23 42.941.156 fbxsdk-2013.3-mtd.lib
That is, does your relative directory structure match ExtLibs\fbx\lib\vs2010\x86?
